Understanding Diesel Exhaust

Fluid Diesel Exhaust Fluid is a specific chemical composition of urea and deionized water. It is sprayed into the exhaust stream of diesel-powered engines. Its primary function is to break down nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions into nitrogen and water. This process is utilized by Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems. The use of DEF was required by the Clean Air Act for all diesel vehicles produced in the U.S.A. starting January 2010 to meet tighter emission standards.
